Top 20 Albums (in random order) #29: The Afghan Whigs – Black Love

********The Afghan Whigs – Black Love*********

The fifth album of this great American band is quite possibly their best. Each song could very well be a single release and all together are combined to create a very noiresque sort of album. Black Love is dark, grim and gritty. The songs are filled with emotions that cover the full range between love and hate.  In truth, The Afghan Whigs have always kept themselves on this side of the bar. But never before, or after, have they -imho- created a complete package.

Every time I put this cd on I literally stop and listen. It’s not background music. These are songs that take you over and maybe dictate your emotions depending on where you come from at the time you’re listening to them. They can bring you down, they can lift you, but even when the way is upwards, it’s done in a violent way. You seek revenge. And search these lyrics for the words to reap your vengeance.

Still, Black Love is above all a love album, and since love kills in so many various ways, good or bad, these songs do justice to this reality.

So remember, next time love hurts you deeply, or lifts you up in a way that brings waves of melancholy on your path, just repeat after Greg Dulli:

Now i know my heart
Is being used
But what i’m not allowed to have
I never could refuse
No matter what i tried 2 do
I stood accused
